How to Apply for Japan Digital Nomad Visa (2026)

Japan’s digital nomad category is Designated Activities. Check the eligible country/region list linked in the MOFA guide before preparing an application.

Prepare the core documents

• Passport and a visa application form with a photograph.
• Documents explaining your planned activities and period of stay in Japan.
• Evidence of annual income of at least JPY 10,000,000, such as tax or income certificates or contracts showing the period and amount.
• Insurance evidence covering death, injury and illness during your stay, including at least JPY 10,000,000 in medical treatment coverage for injury or illness. Prepare the insurance certificate and policy summary.

For the principal applicant, presenting a COE allows the activity-plan, income and insurance documents above to be omitted under MOFA’s checklist. A COE does not guarantee a visa.

Accompanying spouses and children have a separate checklist, including relationship evidence, a copy of the principal applicant’s passport and insurance evidence. For family coverage, provide documents showing who is covered. Use the official family checklist for the complete application.

Submit through the responsible diplomatic mission

Check the mission’s jurisdiction, local checklist, appointments, fees and submission method before filing. MOFA’s application procedure explains the overseas route. This visa procedure is separate from a change of status of residence inside Japan.

Processing and local requirements differ. For example, San Francisco’s checklist states a minimum of five business days with sufficient documents, while Los Angeles warns that referral to Japan may take up to two months. Neither is a worldwide guarantee; use your own mission’s current instructions.

Check the conditions before travel

MOFA specifies six months with no extension. Visa validity for entry and the permitted period of stay are different: Los Angeles describes a visa normally valid for one entry within three months of issue. Check the issued visa and consult Immigration before planning departure and re-entry during your stay.
