How to Read Your Japanese Residence Card (在留カード)
Understand your Japan residence card: the status of residence and period of stay fields that matter most, plus the carry and address-change rules you must follow.
Your 在留カード (residence card) is issued to mid- and long-term residents and is your main proof of legal status in Japan. Most of the card is self-explanatory, but two fields do the heavy lifting.
The two fields that matter most

| Period of stay (在留期間) | Your expiry date. Renew before it passes or you risk overstaying. |
Check the period of stay regularly and start your renewal well before the date printed on the card.
Your obligations
- Carry it at all times. You must be able to show the card on request.
- Report address changes within 14 days. Take the card to your ward or city office whenever you move.
Common questions
Do I really have to carry my residence card everywhere?+
Yes. Mid- and long-term residents must carry their residence card at all times and present it if a police or immigration officer asks. Leaving it at home can lead to a fine.
What happens if I move and forget to report it?+
You must report a change of address at your new ward or city office within 14 days of moving. Missing the deadline can affect future renewals and may result in a penalty.
