Japan Dependent Visa Requirements & Income Rules 2026
Understand Japan Dependent Visa eligibility, sponsor income evidence, family documents, eligible visa categories, and residence periods for 2026 applications.
Japan’s 家族滞在 (kazoku taizai), or Dependent, residence status is for the supported spouse or child of a foreign resident holding an eligible status in Japan. Eligibility is limited to those relationships and specified sponsor categories.
The official dependent visa Japan requirements call for financial evidence based on the sponsor’s circumstances. This may include employment, tax, savings, scholarship, or comparable records showing that the dependent’s living costs can be supported.
Who is eligible as a dependent?
Japan dependent visa eligibility covers the sponsor’s spouse and children. The applicant must be receiving support from the qualifying foreign resident in Japan, because the official definition describes the permitted activity as the ordinary daily activity of a supported spouse or child.
For a spouse, the relationship must be a legally recognizable marriage that can be proved with an official marriage or family record. A fiancé, unmarried partner, parent, grandparent, sibling, or other relative does not fall within the status’s spouse-or-child definition.
For a child, the official page requires proof such as a birth certificate or a comparable document establishing the relationship. It does not publish a general age limit on this page, so applicants should not substitute unofficial age rules for the central requirements of a provable parent-child relationship and actual support.
The official list also does not create a general route for bringing parents or extended family under Dependent status. Each applicant must independently fit the spouse or child category.
The applicant must be both the sponsor’s spouse or child and a person receiving the sponsor’s support. The sponsor must also hold one of the specifically listed residence statuses.
Which sponsor visa categories are eligible?
The official Dependent status page lists the qualifying sponsor categories as follows:
- Professor, Artist, Religious Activities, and Journalist
- Highly Skilled Professional, Business Manager, Legal/Accounting Services, Medical Services, Researcher, and Instructor
- Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services, Intra-company Transferee, Nursing Care, Entertainer, and Skilled Labor
- Specified Skilled Worker (ii)
- Cultural Activities and Student
Not every Student-status holder can sponsor a new Dependent entry. The Immigration Services Agency states that students at Japanese-language educational institutions are not eligible to bring family under Dependent status, regardless of the institution’s school type. Check the sponsor’s educational activity against the applicable landing criteria. Official immigration FAQ
The sponsor must currently reside in Japan under a listed category and support the applicant. Holding a work-related or study-related status that is not on the official list does not satisfy this particular route.
A particularly important distinction concerns Specified Skilled Worker: the list expressly names Specified Skilled Worker (ii). Applicants should therefore confirm that the sponsor holds that specifically listed category rather than relying on the general name of the program.
Income and financial support requirements
The documentary requirements depend on the sponsor’s type of activity. The sponsor must submit the applicable evidence of occupation and income or other evidence showing the ability to cover the applicant’s living expenses.
Sponsors who work or operate a business
A sponsor conducting an income-generating business or receiving remuneration must provide proof of occupation. The accepted examples include an employment certificate or a copy of a business permit.
The sponsor must also provide a resident tax certificate of taxation—or non-taxation—and a tax payment certificate showing annual total income and tax payment status. If one certificate contains both sets of information, the official instructions allow that single certificate to be used.
These municipal documents may be unavailable when a sponsor has only recently entered Japan or has moved between municipalities. In that situation, the Immigration Services Agency instructs applicants to contact the nearest regional immigration office rather than silently omitting the evidence.
Sponsors who do not receive employment or business income
For a sponsor outside the paid-work or income-generating business category, the listed evidence includes a bank balance certificate in the sponsor’s name. A scholarship certificate may also be used if it states both the benefit amount and the benefit period.
Comparable evidence may be submitted when it demonstrates that the applicant’s living costs can be paid. This route is particularly relevant to sponsors whose support plan relies on savings or scholarship funding rather than employment income.
Do not choose documents only because they are easiest to obtain. Build the financial section around whether the sponsor receives remuneration or operates an income-generating business, as those circumstances determine the documents listed by immigration.
Applicants should follow the evidence category that matches the sponsor’s circumstances and use the requested documents to demonstrate that the applicant’s living costs can be covered.
Documents proving the relationship and support
For a new application from outside Japan, the usual route is an application for a Certificate of Eligibility. The official Dependent checklist calls for the following core materials:
- A completed Certificate of Eligibility application form
- A photograph meeting the prescribed specifications
- An addressed return envelope with the required postage for registered delivery
- A copy of the sponsor’s residence card or passport
- Documents proving the applicant’s relationship to the sponsor
- The applicable documents proving the sponsor’s occupation and financial support
Relationship evidence may be a family register copy, certificate of acceptance of a marriage notification, copy of a marriage certificate, copy of a birth certificate, or a comparable record. Use records that directly connect the names of the applicant and sponsor and clearly establish whether the application is based on marriage or parentage.
Documents issued in Japan must be issued within three months of submission. Any document prepared in a foreign language must be accompanied by a Japanese translation.
Submitted materials are generally not returned. If an original is difficult to replace and return is necessary, the applicant should request its return when filing rather than waiting until after submission.
Differences between the name on the Certificate of Eligibility and the name in the applicant’s passport can cause additional checks. Where a difference may arise, the official instructions recommend submitting a passport copy with the application when possible.
Immigration may request materials beyond the standard checklist during examination. Missing required documents can substantially delay examination or lead to an unfavorable disposition, so each item should be checked before filing.
How the residence period is tied to the sponsor
Dependent status is tied to the sponsor through its legal basis: the applicant qualifies as a supported spouse or child of someone residing under an eligible category. It is not an independent family status detached from the sponsor’s residence status and support.
The dependent’s period of stay is individually designated within a maximum of five years. Because the period is assigned individually, applicants should not assume that the dependent will automatically receive the same expiry date or duration as the sponsor.
For an extension, immigration again requests evidence of the family relationship, a copy of the sponsor’s residence card or passport, and the relevant occupation and income documents. This means continuing relationship and support evidence remains important at renewal.
If a spouse holding Dependent status becomes widowed or divorced, a notification concerning the spouse is required. A sponsor who changes to a residence status outside the eligible list should also check the dependent’s continuing eligibility with immigration.
Application checklist and procedure
Use the following sequence to organize the application:
- Confirm the relationship. Verify that the applicant is the sponsor’s legal spouse or child and that the relationship can be documented.
- Check the sponsor’s status. Confirm that the sponsor holds one of the residence statuses on the official eligible list and prepare a copy of the sponsor’s residence card or passport.
- Choose the financial evidence route. Prepare employment and tax records for a paid or business sponsor, or savings, scholarship, or comparable support evidence for another type of sponsor.
- Prepare relationship records. Add Japanese translations for foreign-language documents and confirm that certificates issued in Japan are recent enough.
- Check names and copies. Ensure that names are consistent across passports, residence cards, marriage records, birth records, and application forms.
- File the correct procedure. Use a Certificate of Eligibility application for planned entry, a change-of-status application when changing from another status in Japan, or an extension application when continuing Dependent status.
A Certificate of Eligibility application can be made online, and no application fee is charged. Paper applications must be filed at the appropriate regional immigration office and are not accepted by post.
The published standard processing period is one to three months, so the application should be submitted with sufficient time before the intended entry. A granted Certificate of Eligibility can be presented for the visa and landing procedures to facilitate their examination.
