J-Skip and J-Find: Japan's Fast Tracks for High Earners and Top Grads

Two newer programs let high earners skip the Highly Skilled points test (PR in one year) and top-university graduates stay two years to job-hunt. Who qualifies, and the exact thresholds.

Alongside the points-based Highly Skilled Professional visa, Japan runs two newer programs — J-Skip and J-Find — that opened in April 2023 and are often missed.

Already in effect (since April 2023). These sit alongside, and don't replace, the standard Highly Skilled points system.

J-Skip — skip the points test

J-Skip (, Special Highly Skilled Professional) grants Highly-Skilled-equivalent status based purely on income plus degree or experience — no points calculation:

  • Researchers / specialists: a master's degree or 10+ years' experience, and annual income of ¥20 million+
  • Executives / managers: 5+ years' management experience and annual income of ¥40 million+

The payoff is bigger than the standard track: permanent residency after just one year, a five-year period of stay, your spouse can work, you can bring parents and even employ domestic help under conditions, and you get priority immigration processing.

J-Find — for top-university graduates

J-Find () is a job-hunting status for recent graduates of the world's top universities:

  • Graduated from a university ranked in the top 100 in at least two of three major world rankings (QS, THE, and ARWU/Shanghai)
  • Within five years of graduation
  • Savings of at least ¥200,000 at the time of application
  • A Designated Activities status, up to two years, to job-hunt or prepare a startup

What it means for you

If you're a high earner, check J-Skip before assembling a points sheet — you may qualify for a faster, stronger status without it. If you just graduated from a top-100 university, J-Find buys you two years on the ground to land a job, which is far easier than applying from overseas.

Common questions

How is J-Skip different from the normal Highly Skilled visa?+

The standard Highly Skilled Professional visa makes you score 70+ points across education, salary, age, and more. J-Skip skips the points sheet entirely — if you meet the income and degree/experience thresholds, you qualify directly, with even stronger perks.

Is J-Find a work visa?+

No. J-Find is a Designated Activities status for up to two years that lets recent top-university graduates job-hunt or prepare to start a business. Once you find a job, you switch to a normal work status.
